Department of communication studies appoints Tim Steffensmeier as department head
Submitted by Communications and Marketing
After an internal search earlier this month, Tim Steffensmeier was appointed head of the newly independent department of communication studies. The department of communication studies is the academic home for 12 faculty members and more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students studying communication and rhetoric in organizational, political, legal and relational contexts.
Steffensmeier, an associate professor of communications studies, also is a research associate with K-State's Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy. His primary research interests are in deliberative democracy, rhetorical invention and argumentation. This research informs Steffensmeier’s work on community and leadership development, particularly with Public Square Communities and the Kansas Leadership Center.
Communication studies, theatre and dance were one department before the creation of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Communication studies offers bachelor's and master's degrees and houses the university's debate, forensics and mock trial teams.
