Beach Museum of Art curator Aileen June Wang to talk on 'The Art of Lynn Benson' in Alma
Beach Museum of Art curator Aileen June Wang will talk about Lynn Benson's art and practice at 2 p.m. May 20 at The Volland Store, 24098 Volland Road, in Alma.
Benson's multimedia works represent bodies of water impacted by development and politics. In 1969, the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio, burst into flames due to sparks falling on oil-covered debris floating on its surface. The news caught Benson's attention and inspired her to study how human activity affects a vitally important resource: water.
The Beach Museum and The Volland Store Gallery are each presenting exhibitions of Benson's work: "Water Stories by Lynn Benson," currently on view at the Beach Museum through May 26, and "River Compositions by Lynn Benson" at The Volland Store Gallery through July 15.
The Beach Museum exhibition also presents the artist's 2018 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print, "Dancing on the Table." This work reflects Benson's interest in water sources that flow under the ground such as the Ogallala Aquifer in parts of Western Kansas and surrounding states. The new gift print is available for purchase with a 25 percent discount for Friends at the annual $100 giving level and above.
