Ken Guan to present guest lecture, workshop on international student integration strategies

Submitted by Abby Franchitti

The Office of International Programs' English Language Program will host a presentation by guest speaker Ken Guan of Indiana University as part of the Creating Dialogues: International Undergraduate Student Integration Through Institutional Efforts event on Friday, Oct. 19.

Guan will present his work on international student integration strategies from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Town Hall at the Leadership Studies Building.

Three panel discussions will follow the presentation from 2-5 p.m. and will allow students, colleges and support services to explore their experiences and thoughts on the topic. These discussions will be followed by periods of questions and answers from the public.

The English Language Program worked with Guan before his doctoral research and first offered him the opportunity to use his experience to serve international students. Aside from advising new English learners, he designed curriculum for undergraduate international students related to their retention and graduation and has taught intercultural academic and co-curricular courses. Before his doctoral studies, Guan served in various roles in higher education as an instructional consultant, residence life coordinator, and international student services and support coordinator.

Guan earned his doctorate in higher education specializing in human resources management and organizational behavior, along with a graduate certificate in institutional research at the Indiana University Bloomington. His dissertation focused on assessing institutional efforts to build culturally engaging environments and to support international and domestic undergraduate students in the U.S.

At the national level, Guan has chaired the committee that recognizes best practices worldwide in international education through NASPA. He also takes leadership role in the development of the International Channel through ACPA video on demand. He is a 2018 national award recipient for Service to the International Community through ACPA-College Student Educators International.
