Keeping Fido, Fluffy legal in Manhattan
Submitted by Communications and Marketing
All dogs and cats currently living in the Manhattan city limits over the age of four months must be vaccinated against rabies and registered with the city in accordance to the Manhattan City Ordinances 6-36 and 6-40.
To help students, new faculty and staff keep their pets legal, the T. Russell Reitz Regional Animal Shelter will be issuing city pet licenses from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 15 and Oct. 10 at Petco in Manhattan.
"We want to convey to the students and other Manhattan newcomers that all pet owners need to vaccinate and register their pets," said Angela Smith, tech and rescue coordinator with the shelter. "Also, it is important that pet owners know that the city ordinance does enforce a leash law."
This unique event is intended to help members of the public who are unable to obtain license tags through City Hall business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
To register at Petco or City Hall during business hours, bring cash or check to pay for the license, official paperwork of rabies vaccination from a veterinarian, and – if applicable – proof of spay or neuter.
More information about city laws concerning pets can be found under section 6-22 of the city's code.
