Second NACADA webinar offered March 5
The second NACADA webinar for the spring semester, "You Are Not So Smart: Academic Advising Edition," will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in 205 K-State Student Union.
Imagine an emotionally charged, highly resistant third-year student who was doing OK for semesters but is now failing most of her courses and has to come to your office to register for classes. The student doesn't appear to like you or the university. What might be going on in the student's brain? In yours? How will you help her?
Drawing from concepts introduced in David McRaney's 2012 bestselling book, "You Are Not So Smart," presenters Gina Beyer and Amanda Voight will discuss concepts relevant to the work academic advisors do with students. They will take participants on an adventure through their brains, demonstrating how easy it is to fall prey to the ways our minds work, including biases and logical fallacies in the context of education. They will show how the natural workings of our brains can affect our daily lives, creating social and psychological challenges, and share tips and tricks to work through the challenges of the human mind to improve student learning. Interactive case studies also will be used so participants can apply new insights for solutions to their most challenging student interactions.
This webinar is provided free of charge to the K-State community.
