Global Campus to offer professional development for teaching online

Submitted by Grant Guggisberg

Kansas State University Global Campus, in partnership with K-State Polytechnic, will offer K-State Online Essentials, a six-week course-preparation experience designed to assist in developing a quality online course. The experience is for K-State faculty members who are currently teaching online courses or who plan to develop an online course this year.

K-State Online Essentials will be completely online during the months of June and July. Several synchronous sessions will be offered through Zoom over the six weeks. Several hands-on technology demonstrations and discussions will take place.

Global Campus is also considering adding a fully online session over the fall semester.

Faculty members taking the course will design a new online course or re-design an existing online course. The course covers pedagogy and best practices for teaching online while offering practical applications. Through the course, participants gain higher confidence in the ability to teach online, learning meaningful instructor-to-student and student-to-student interaction techniques.

Global Campus also provides faculty with the opportunity to attend professional conferences through a limited number of Distance Education Conference stipends. Conference travel stipends of $1,000 are available for faculty members who are active online instructors or are planning to establish distance courses. Funds are designated to attend a conference centered on online teaching and learning. Conference options have expanded, and Global Campus is also open to considering proposals for other opportunities.

Faculty interested in the K-State Online Essentials course or the conference opportunity can apply at global.k-state.edu/faculty/resources. Applications are due April 12 A selection process will take place in late April with class participants and conference attendees receiving notification by May 1.
