Web conferencing tools: Vidyo and BlueJeans available for testing

Submitted by Luke Haselwood

Video conferencing services in iTAC has begun a pilot program for testing Vidyo and BlueJeans, which are both designed to make conferencing over the Web easy to use, secure and reliable.

  1. The BlueJeans pilot will be available until mid-January 2013.
  2. The Vidyo pilot will be available until October 2013.

Both services will be free-of-charge to use during the pilot programs.

Vidyo is an easy-to-use, scalable video conferencing service available with a small download and install of Vidyo Desktop. The desktop application allows for quick and easy video conferences between desktops, mobile devices including iOS and Android devices, and legacy H.323 endpoints such as Polycom, Cisco, LifeSize. Currently, the number of users logged into the system is not limited, but only five users can be connected to a call at one time.

BlueJeans is a high-quality video conferencing bridge in the cloud that allows easy connections between Skype, Google Video Chat, Microsoft Lync, legacy H.323 endpoints, and many more endpoints including those on mobile devices. The BlueJeans bridge can be accessed simply by following instructions sent via email to those participating in the meeting. We currently have access to one meeting room that allows for 25 simultaneous connections from any endpoint listed.

Each solution is listed as a resource in Zimbra — iTAC-Vidyo-res, iTAC-BlueJeans-res. From there you can see when the use of the pilot is available. Administrative approval is required for scheduling specific times with the resources.

K-State faculty/staff and departments/units interested in helping pilot these solutions and who would like more information on getting started should contact Luke Haselwood at lhaselwo@k-state.edu or call 785-532-5995 and select option two for video conferencing.
