Now is the time to get your flu vaccine

Submitted by Shawn Funk

Flu is a potentially serious, contagious disease that can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu can lead to hospitalization and even death. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection. That's why it is best to get vaccinated before influenza viruses start to spread in your community and before traveling home for holidays and winter break.

Lafene Health Center offers flu vaccines for all students, faculty and staff. An appointment for a flu vaccination can be made on the myLafene+ patient portal or by calling 785-532-6544. The cost for the flu vaccine is covered by most insurance companies, but if not, the cost for students is $22 and the cost for faculty and staff is $25.

Getting a flu vaccine every year provides the best protection against the flu. Although the flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, getting a flu vaccine this fall will be more important than ever.
