Architectural engineering students win scholarships from Kansas City building technical society

Kansas State University architectural engineering students Alyssa Shinn and Kyle Knuth have been selected as scholarship winners for the 2013-2014 school year by the Kansas City chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, or ASHRAE.

Shinn, a fourth-year student in the five-year architectural engineering program, Manhattan, is an active student member in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers chapter at the university. She received a $1,000 scholarship.

"I am very appreciative of this scholarship," Shinn said. "I plan to pursue a career in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry through my major of architectural engineering after I graduate."

Shinn is the daughter of Bryan and Leslie Bates and Theron Shinn.

Knuth, a fourth-year student in architectural engineering from Adrian, Mo., received a $3,000 scholarship. He has been involved with the society for the past two years and believes that by attending the local and national meetings around the country while being active in the student branch has helped him grow.

"I plan on using this scholarship to complete my degree next year and pursue a career as a mechanical engineer in the heating, air conditioning, ventilation and building mechanical systems design industry," Knuth said.

After obtaining his degree, Knuth wants to work on mechanical systems of health care buildings such as hospitals and other research facilities. His goal is to make them more sustainable and energy efficient.

Knuth is the son of David and Sharon Knuth.

"This is a wonderful honor for these architectural engineering students and speaks to the quality of our students," said Julia Keen, associate professor of architectural engineering and construction science. "These scholarships reinforce the importance of student branch chapters of professional organizations and the strength of the relationship between ASHRAE and K-State."

The students will be honored at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers student night meeting March 4 in Kansas City.
