Six entomology graduate students receive scholarships
The department of entomology recently announced the winners of its 2011 scholarships. Six graduate students in the department were selected to receive certificates and $200-$500 each:
* Wendy Johnson received the R. C. Smith Ph.D. scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student nearing completion in a Ph.D. program based on overall accomplishments including GPA, publications, research and teaching accomplishments, and a nomination letter from a faculty member or fellow student. Johnson will complete her Ph.D. this spring under the guidance of Jim Nechols and Raymond Cloyd.
* Predeesh Chandran received the R.C. Smith M.S. Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student nearing completion in an master's program based on overall accomplishments including GPA, publications, research and teaching accomplishments, and a nomination letter from a faculty member or fellow student. Chandran is finishing his master's degree with John Reese.
* Carl Doud received the O. W. "Spide" Morris Scholarship. This award is given to a graduate student who has made significant contributions to the department of entomology or the profession of entomology through extracurricular activities. Doud is a Ph.D. student with Ludek Zurek.
* Leah Sigle received the R.H. Painter M.S. Scholarship. This scholarship is open to new master's level students enrolled in the department of entomology graduate program. The award is based on GPA, a research proposal and any other evidence of scholarship potential in entomology. Sigle is working on her master's degree with Marcelo Ramalho-Ortigao.
* Illiano Gomes received the Floyd Holmes Scholarship. The scholarship is intended for students who have recently presented their research proposals and is based on overall accomplishments including GPA, a research proposal and any other evidence of scholarship potential in entomology. Gomes is completing his Ph.D. under Marcelo Ramalho-Ortigao.
* Thais Albuquerque received the Fred Clute Scholarship. This scholarship is open to any undergraduate or graduate student in entomology with preference given to those with a specific interest or research project in integrated pest management. Albuquerque is working on her Ph.D. with Ludek Zurek.
