Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance students present in England

Submitted by Jane P. Marshall

In March, Elaine Johannes, associate professor in family studies and human services in the College of Human Ecology, led the first international study-abroad course offered within the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance Youth Development, or GP-IDEA, program for distance students. Students presented at the international History of Youth and Community Work conference in Leeds, England.

The panel was "Perspectives from Youth Development Students in the U.S.: Detached and Center-Based Work." The students are Erica Baker, Abby Bettini, Kylie Dicket, Tajiana Ellis and Kristen Garcia.

The four-day Leeds conference was followed with a five-day educational experience at George Williams College, London, which featured faculty lectures, student consults, youth service, or "ragged schools," historical tour of central London and meetings at three youth-service sites in London.

Johannes recently received the program’s Faculty Excellence Award at the group's annual meeting in Kansas City.
