Eduroam partnership expands research opportunities for K-Staters and visiting scholars

In support of K-State 2025’s goals to accommodate the needs of a collaborative research environment, K-State has joined eduroam, a secure, worldwide-federated network access service for the international research and education community.
Visiting researchers from more than 5,500 institutions in 54 countries, including 96 institutions in the U.S., can now access K-State’s secure wireless network, available on the Manhattan and Olathe campuses.
“Providing the tools for research, discovery, scholarly and creative activities is essential to supporting our culture of excellence,” said Provost and Senior Vice President April Mason. “By partnering with eduroam, visiting scholars and researchers are now able to easily use our research centers. We can also extend our support of K-Staters as they travel, work and study around the world.”
Eduroam offers a more secure alternative to public Wi-Fi hotspots, as it uses the partnering institutions wireless network. When at an eduroam-enabled institution, K-Staters use their email address and password to access the eduroam network.
“Information security and universal access are both essential to reaching our 2025 goals,” said Ken Stafford, chief information officer. “In addition to eduroam, K-State also is a member of InCommon Federation and recently implemented Shibboleth in support of expanding research initiatives while securing our network and K-Stater’s identities.”
