KAWSE hosts in-person GROW and EXCITE summer workshops
The K-State Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering, or KAWSE, will host the 23rd annual Girls Researching Our World, or GROW, and 20th annual Exploring SCIence, Technology, and Engineering, or EXCITE, summer workshops, June 8-10. After two years of virtual programming, we look forward to returning to an in-person experience.
GROW and EXCITE are outreach programs for middle and high school students. They are designed to encourage and support girls' interest in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — disciplines. Students of all genders are welcome to participate.
- GROW is open to students finishing the fifth through seventh grades in May.
- EXCITE: open to students finishing eighth through 11th grades in May.
There are multiple ways to engage with these events.
K-State faculty, staff and students are invited to design and facilitate a hands-on science, technology, engineering and/or math activity for the GROW and EXCITE summer orkshops. There is no set theme for the summer workshops. Our goal is to provide students with hands-on experiences in a broad range of STEM disciplines and introduce them to career options in STEM. For more information about facilitating at the workshops and for activity proposal templates, please visit the KAWSE website. Activity proposals are due by May 13.
Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to be summer mentors. Mentor training is on June 7. As a paid member of the KAWSE summer staff, the mentor occupies a crucial role in enriching the experiences of middle school and high school participants in the workshops through role modeling appropriate behavior, mentoring prospective students and supervising underage participants during activities and overnight stays in the residence halls. A complete job description and link to apply are available at k-state.edu/kawse/succeed/employment.html. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
Register your middle or high school student for the GROW or EXCITE summer workshop by April 28 to take advantage of our early-bird prices or to apply for a scholarship. Program participants will be housed in residence hall double occupancy rooms on the Manhattan campus. Students can indicate the name of another student with whom they would like to share a room on the registration form. Every effort to fulfill the request but cannot guarantee requests will be filled. All meals from lunch on Wednesday to lunch on Friday are included in the registration fee. Snacks are provided during the morning and afternoon sessions, as well as in the residence halls in the evening.
For more information, please visit the GROW or EXCITE websites. To register, please visit our online registration form.
