McNair Scholars honored at annual recognition
The McNair Scholars Program at K-State had its 18th annual Scholar Recognition event on Monday, April 22, 2013, in the K-State Student Union Ballroom.
Fourteen McNair Scholars who completed research projects in 2012 were honored: Joshua Bonilla, Simone Dorsey, Olivia Eller, Isaac Falcon, Angelique Foye, Jeremy Gast, Sierra Martin, Anthony Meals, Marian Mersmann, Marilyn Ortega, Mercedes Perry, Stephanie Skinner, Logan Wark and Ruddy Yanez.
Further acknowledgement went to the new McNair scholars who will be doing research in 2013: Brandy Carter, Obdulia Covarrubias, Kathryn Douglas, Kirti Gandhi, Joshua Klarmann, Jack Lemmon, Talus McCowan, Jeffrey Murray, Fernando Roman, Alexia Sampson-Bellot, Jacar Union and Graham Weaver.
The event also called attention to the accomplishments of McNair alumni, such as Bikat Tilahun, who graduated from K-State in 2005 and earned her doctorate in clinical psychology in 2012, as well as the tremendous contributions of our faculty mentors, such as Stephen Kiefer, who worked with Bikat while she was in the program.
Other scholars and alumni, Donte Bernard, Simone Dorsey, Kelsie Doty, Sierra Martin, Marian Mersmann, Emily Mollohan and Mercedes Perry were honored for completing their bachelor’s degrees; Donte Bernard, Simone Dorsey, Kelsie Doty, Jeremy Gast, Will Jernigan and Marian Mersmann for being accepted into graduate school; and Lisa Hillstock, Kristi Mendenhall, Gabrielle "Sims" Rico and Karre Schaefer for receiving master’s degrees.
The McNair Scholars Program is beginning its search for scholars to enter the program in fall 2013. The program is federally funded to prepare eligible students for success in graduate study. K-State faculty and staff are encouraged to submit names, of promising undergraduates who are interested in seeking advanced degrees, to the program by email to mcnair@k-state.edu.
