10 graduate students to present research at the Capitol

On Wednesday, March 22, 10 graduate students are headed to the State Capitol Building to represent K-State in the 20th annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit. The students will present posters of their research, which has important implications for the state of Kansas, including food science and safety, climate change, family therapy and energy.

The event will be held in the first-floor rotunda of the State Capitol Building in Topeka. The statewide summit includes research from graduate students at Kansas State University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Pittsburg State University, the University of Kansas, the University of Kansas Medical Center and Wichita State University. Graduate students will present their research posters from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and interact with legislators and the public.

University faculty and industry representatives will judge the student poster presentations, and top presenters from each university will receive scholarship awards.

The 10 K-State presenters were chosen based on their research presentations at Research and the State, an annual K-State event, in October 2022:

• Nicholas Gallivan, doctoral student in psychology, "Americans express blind optimism for overcoming climate change."
• Tucker Graff, master's student in grain science, "Grain sorghum as a sustainable ingredient in aquatic feed – grinding and processing energy studies."
• Olivia Haley, doctoral student in horticulture and natural resources, "There's a photon in my water! The application of ultraviolet light technology to enhance the safety of agricultural water on Kansas fresh produce farms."
• Lindsay Howard, doctoral student in health and human sciences specializing in couple and family therapy, "Effectiveness of a brief filial therapy model on child, parent, and relationship outcomes."
• Rachel Keen, doctoral student in biology, "Impacts of woody encroachment on grassland water yield."
• Endy Lopes Kailer, doctoral student in agronomy, "The complex relationship between native mycorrhizal community and phosphorus addition in commercial mycorrhizal inoculant effectiveness.
• Kamilyah Miller, doctoral student in pathobiology, "Surveillance of Echinococcus multilocularis in coyotes in Midwest United Stated."
• Lindsay Morris, doctoral student in physics, "Physics in the field: Application of field-deployable ultrafast laser to measure agricultural significant gasses."
• Mayra Perez-Fajardo, doctoral student in grain science, "Impact of cricket protein powder addition on wheat dough properties and bread quality."
• Shiseido Robinson, master's student in industrial engineering, "Printable conducting layered materials for electronic and energy applications."
