Deven Stone has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 K-State Global Campus Extraordinary Student Award.
The award recognizes an online student who has overcome an obstacle in the path of their education and who demonstrates academic excellence, focus and career ambition in their studies at K-State.
Stone is a student in the online master's degree in community development and is completing the program while balancing a full-time job and supporting her spouse in the military. This past fall, her husband was given orders to relocate to Japan. Stone prepared their family for the move all while taking two graduate courses, working full-time and maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
"Deven is a highly motivated student who loves being involved in her classes and interacting with her classmates and professors," said Virginia Brenner-Livingston, a program coordinator for the landscape architecture and regional & community planning program who nominated Stone. "Even though this was stressful, she succeeded in passing her classes in the fall and has made the transition to a new life halfway across the world."
"Seeing the hard work, perseverance and ultimate successes of our online students is what inspires those of us who work at universities," said Karen Pedersen, dean of K-State Global Campus. "I am pleased to honor Deven for her accomplishments and am eager to see the great things she does in the future."
