National Suicide Prevention Week is Sept. 10-16

Submitted by Shawn Funk

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention recognizes the entire month of September as National Suicide Prevention Month and Sept. 10-16 as National Suicide Prevention Week.

The Thrive Navigators, the well-being and mental health departmental student organization under the leadership of Lafene Health Center and the Morrison Family Center for Student Well-being, are dedicated to bringing awareness to mental health resources on campus as well as reducing the stigma that surrounds mental health.

The Navigators chose "Continuing Your Story" as this year's theme for the week. The semicolon is a recognized symbol used when an author could have chosen to end their sentence but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life. Follow the Thrive Navigators on Twitter, @ThriveKSU, and Instagram, @thriveksu, and watch for several posts about K-State mental health resources throughout the day Monday, Sept. 11.

Throughout the week, the Navigators will table at various locations with a banner to sign to pledge to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health. On Sept. 11, they will be at the Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex from 3-5 p.m.; on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 they will be at the K-State Student Union across from Pretzelmaker from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and on Sept. 14 they will be at Hale Library in Room 104, right inside the first-floor entrance from 10 a.m. to noon.

Register to attend a Bandana Project open training which will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Town Hall in the Staley School of Leadership. The Bandana Project is a suicide prevention campaign to help students learn how to recognize and respond to signs of distress in their peers. The training will be provided by the Thrive Navigators.
