KBOR proposes alignment of notices of non-reappointment

Submitted by Ethan Erickson

Dear K-State community,

The Kansas Board of Regents has released the agenda for the December meeting, which includes a discussion about the adoption of a uniform notice of non-reappointment, or NNR, policy for non-tenure track faculty and staff across Kansas Board of Regents institutions. This agenda item is slated for first read this month with a vote likely to occur in January.

This draft policy was born from a KBOR review of existing NNR policies across institutions. The review identified some disparate processes, specifically regarding the NNR notice periods. The new draft policy aims to align those practices across all KBOR institutions. While the existing policy for tenure-track faculty will remain unchanged, the current policy for all classes of employees other than tenure-track faculty will be subject to proposed updates.

The draft KBOR policy is not considered final at this time and is still subject to change, but we anticipate a final policy will be passed early next year. If passed, a university working group will then be formed that would include administration and Faculty Senate members. The group will develop a recommendation to the president that includes the removal of the current NNR language from the University Handbook and the development of a K-State Policy and Procedures Manual chapter supporting the required policy updates.

We realize the NNR policy discussion may raise questions about the university contract process in general. At this time, the contract process will remain as is, with plans to further review and align it in the future.

We will communicate through K-State Today and on the Human Resources website to keep you informed about this policy and the recommendations of the university’s working group as the work progresses.

Sincerely,

Ethan Erickson
Vice president for administration and finance
