Bijan Gurung, doctoral student in horticulture and natural resources, and Aleah Querns, doctoral student in biology, and Jeeban Panthi, postdoctoral researcher in biological and agricultural engineering, have been awarded graduate fellowships for the spring 2024 semester by the natural resources and environmental sciences, or NRES, secondary major.

The NRES Graduate Fellowship program recognizes students and postdoctoral researchers with exceptional teaching and research achievements who seek additional experience in interdisciplinary teaching and research mentoring.

"The long-standing mission of the NRES secondary major is to provide undergraduates with a comprehensive interdisciplinary experience in environmental science, sustainability science, and natural resource management," said Shawn Hutchinson, professor of geography and geospatial sciences and director of the NRES secondary major. "On behalf of our governing board, I'm pleased to welcome the new fellows to our team of research mentors who will share their passion for interdisciplinary and collaborative environmental problem-solving with students in our capstone course."

Fellows receive an award of $1,500 for mentoring research conducted by small multidisciplinary teams of senior undergraduates enrolled in the BAE/DAS/GENAG 582 NRES capstone class. Recipients are also eligible to apply for a $500 NRES Travel Award during the current academic year.

Fellowship applications for the fall 2024 semester are now being accepted and will be due no later than April 19. Doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in any discipline conducting research in the general domains of natural resource management, environmental sciences, human-environment interactions or sustainability science are encouraged to apply.
