Chapman Center hosts website launch event at Manhattan Public Library
The Chapman Center for Rural Studies invites students, faculty, staff and the public to its website launch event from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Manhattan Public Library auditorium.
The event will introduce the community to the new home of digital collections showcasing stories about the Great Plains. This new site provides space for students, faculty and community members to share their research with a broader audience. The event will also celebrate the center's refreshed Lost Kansas Communities Research Collection website. This digital archive features rural Kansas, history and people while housing research that has been conducted by undergraduate students at Kansas State University since 2010.
The launch party will include a hot cocoa bar and cookies, door prizes, and several lightning talks from Chapman Center students and staff focusing on the highlights of both websites. Talks will include stories of Kansas ghost towns, K-State history and the legacy of the Cessna farm in Kansas. New digital exhibits were made possible by sponsorship from the National Endowment for the Humanities and additional support from Cheryl Mellenthin, wife of late Chapman Center founder Mark A. Chapman.
The Chapman Center for Rural Studies is a digital humanities research lab and center for excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences. Its mission is to research, preserve and share the history and lived experiences of rural Kansas. It accomplishes this through undergraduate interdisciplinary research projects, building partnerships with the K-State community, and engaging a rich network of historical museums and public history organizations in Kansas.
This event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to chapmancenter@k-state.edu or 785-532-0380 by Tuesday, Jan 30.
