Hallaq to present 'Captioning Your Classroom Videos'
Submitted by Ashley A Schiffer
Tom Hallaq, associate professor in the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication, will present "Captioning Your Classroom Videos" from noon to 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 31, via Zoom as part of the Teaching and Learning Center's Professional Development Series.
Captioning is a critical component for social media and online videos, enhancing accessibility for users with hearing impairments. Captions are also popular among users without these disabilities and estimates suggest that up to 85% of users watch videos with audio muted (Patel, 2016). While many online video platforms offer auto-captions to help content producers meet captioning demands, their accuracy poses a challenge, often requiring editing to improve accuracy. This presentation addresses core legal insights on captioning requirements and basic practical instruction for editing auto-captions on YouTube and other platforms.
