New charging stations open in A28 lot
The Carl R. Ice College of Engineering is announcing the opening of two new electric vehicle, or EV, charging stations located in the A28 parking lot directly north of the Engineering Complex.
Powered entirely by the adjacent solar canopy, these charging stations are unique in that they are not connected to the electrical grid, providing 100% renewable energy directly to connected vehicles. The solar power system can deliver approximately 8 to 10 miles of range per hour under sunny conditions. The station has a limited battery capacity to provide minimal range at night or during extended overcast conditions. Please recognize that if the station batteries are depleted and the sun is not shining, the charging stations will not be able to provide any range to your vehicle.
The EV chargers are free to use, but standard K-State parking rules apply. Only EVs that are charging are permitted to park in these stalls. Users must have a valid parking permit from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and your vehicle's license plates must face the drive aisle. To ensure the longevity of the charging equipment, please remember to recoil the charging cable and reseat the connector after use, keeping the cable off the ground.
These innovative charging stations were designed by students from the GE Johnson Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science as part of an undergraduate research project. This project was made possible by the support of a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Education Award, the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering and additional in-kind donations from HME, Inc., based out of Topeka.
We invite everyone to come and see these new additions to our campus, representing the dedication and ingenuity of our students and the commitment to the university’s sustainability efforts.
