ADVANCE Distinguished Lecture Series presents Raja Ghosh at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in 1107 Fiedler Auditorium. 

Ghosh, professor of chemical engineering at McMaster University in Canada, holds the Canada research chair in bioseparations engineering. His research interests are primarily in the area of membrane science and technology for separation and purification of protein biopharmaceuticals, such as monoclonal antibodies.

Membrane chromatography is a separation technique, which involves the use of adsorptive membranes as chromatographic media. It is a relatively new technique that is already being used for a range of biopharmaceutical, food and biomedical applications. In membrane chromatography, the transport of solute molecules takes place predominantly by convection. This reduces processing time and contributes towards higher productivity and lower product degradation by proteolysis, denaturation and aggregation.

Being a new technology, membrane chromatography faces a range of real and perception based challenges. This presentation looks at some of the working principles of this new technique, reviews some of its current applications and potential future opportunities, and highlights some of the key challenges.
