Geography faculty, students present, receive honors at regional meeting

Faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from the geography department participated in the annual 2017 meeting of the Great Plains-Rocky Mountain Division of the American Association of Geographers Oct. 13-14 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. 

The following faculty and students made presentations — papers or posters — at the meeting: 

• Ali S. Alghamadi, graduate student, and John Harrington Jr., professor, presented "Temporal Trends and Spatial Patterns of Warm Season Hot Temperatures in Saudi Arabia." 

• Harrington also presented "The Kansas Geographic Alliance: History and Current Status."

• Karl Bauer, graduate student, presented "Rural Population Decline and 'Free Land' Programs in the Great Plains." 

• Barrie Chileen, graduate student, and colleagues Thomas P. Albright and Devin Jacobs presented "An Evaluation of Gridded Temperature Products and their Effectiveness in Modeling Small-Scale Ambient Temperature." 

• Amariah Fischer, graduate student, and Shawn Hutchinson, associate professor, presented "Proposing a Geographic Information Dashboard: Why and How." 

• Hutchinson and colleague Austin Braget presented "Time Series Analysis of Vegetation Phenometrics for the Flint Hills Ecoregion, 2001-2015." 

• Thomas B. Larsen, graduate student, and Harrington presented "Composing and Refining a Learning Progression for Place." 

• Abbey Marcotte, undergraduate student, and Kendra K. McLauchlan, associate professor, presented "Determining the Effects of Fire on Spatial Patterns of Nutrients in an Oak Savanna." 

• Hilda Onuoha, graduate student, and colleague Shunfu Hu presented "Analysis of Urban Growth in Edwardsville/Glen Carbon, Illinois using Remote Sensing and Population Change Data." 

 

The following students won awards at the meeting: 

• Abbey Marcotte earned second place in the undergraduate poster competition. 

• Ali S. Alghamdi earned third place in the graduate student paper competition. 

• The K-State team comprised of Karl Bauer, Barrie Chileen, Amariah Fischer, Marcotte, and Hilda Onuoha — placed second in the GeoBowl competition and Karl Bauer tied for first in individual scoring.
