Pre-law advisor announces retirement
Daralyn Gordon Arata is retiring May 2 after 16 years as K-State's pre-law advisor.
Under her leadership, the pre-law program has assembled an advisory council, established innovative programs in conjunction with the University of Kansas and Washburn University School of Law, respectively, supported a winning mock trial team and pre-law ambassador program, and hosted a pre-law fair that annually welcomes law school representatives from coast-to-coast.
In addition to innumerable events and programs that provide enrichment for K-State's rough complement of 300 pre-law students at any given time, Arata has supported more than 1,000 past advisees in successful application to law schools of their choice, including those regarded as among the nation's very most selective and prestigious. K-State is the only university in Kansas listed among the American Bar Association's Top 240 Feeder Schools in the U.S. In 2008, Arata received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.
Arata earned her Juris Doctor from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in Virginia and her Master of Laws in taxation from the George Washington University Law School.
Jim Hohenbary, director of the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships and associate director of the University Honors Program, will chair the search for K-State's next pre-law advisor.
A reception for Arata will be announced in April.
