Vernon Larson International Luncheon Lecture
Submitted by Bhadriraju Subramanyam
The first Vernon Larson International Lecture, “West African Music and Social Dance at Kansas State University: Past, Present and Future,” will begin at 12:15 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Holiday Inn Ballroom, 17th Street and Anderson Avenue.
K-State's Julie L. Pentz, associate professor of dance, and Neil Dunn, instructor in dance and music, have traveled to Ghana twice, each time brining back different parts of the social dance tradition. West African dance and music has become a consistent fixture in the K-State dance program activities. The K-State African Dance and Music Ensemble will perform traditional dances with drums and xylophones. The presentation gives an overview of the dance traditions in Ghana, how it has been shared with the community and information about the next trip to Ghana in 2013.
All Vernon Larson Lectures take place in the Holiday Inn Ballroom, 17th Street and Anderson Avenue, between 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. An optional lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., with the free presentation beginning at 12:15 p.m. The cost of lunch is $15 per individual, $75 for whole year, or $90 to sponsor an eight-person table.
Reservations for the luncheons can be made by e-mailing oip@k-state.edu or calling 785-532-5990. Reservations should be made at the latest by noon Friday, Sept. 14, or by 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17. Please make checks payable to the KSU Foundation.
