Kraemer-Holland publishes manuscripts in international journals related to state and national education policies

Submitted by Patrice Scott

Angela Kraemer-Holland, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education, recently published two manuscripts in international education journals.

Using critical discourse analysis, both manuscripts focus on proposed and enacted education policies that challenge teachers' educational authority and pedagogical practices.

Kraemer-Holland's first manuscript, "Who Holds Educational Authority? Framing the Authoritarian Turn in the Conservative 'Gag Orders' in the United States," was published in Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice. The article explores the restrictive policies passed in multiple states across the U.S. that curtail the teaching of particular topics and ideas. Kraemer-Holland's second manuscript was published open access in Educational Policy Analysis Archives. It examines four education bills proposed in the Kansas Legislature in 2023 that complicate the presence and agency of Kansas educational stakeholders. "Erasure, Expert/ise, and Educational 'Choice:' A Poststructuralist Perspective of Kansas Educational Bills in 2023" is available online.

Kraemer-Holland's lines of inquiry explore neoliberalism in education, teacher socialization and policy-as-discourse from critical qualitative approaches.
