Recital of music from the Silk Road
Submitted by the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance
In commemoration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the K-State School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present a free recital of "Music by Composers from the Silk Road" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in All Faiths Chapel.
Performers include K-State faculty members Amanda Arrington, piano; Craig B. Parker, trumpet and piano; David Pickering, organ; and Patricia Thompson, mezzo soprano. Assisting will be graduate student Colby Stevens, oboe.
The concert features music by American composers whose ancestors came from countries along the ancient Eurasian trading routes known as the Silk Road.
Composers represented on this recital are Reena Esmail, India, "Pranayam"; Vivian Fung, China, "Apéritif"; Alan Hovhaness, Armenia, "Aria" from "Haroutiun"; Texu Kim, South Korea, "Take 13"; Young Jo Lee, South Korea, "Dear Mommy and Sister"; Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Iran, "My Body, My Choice and The Threshold of a Cold Season"; Karen Tanaka, Japan, excerpts from "Children of Light"; and Liliya Ugay, Uzbekistan, "Prayer" from "Two Pieces for a Trumpet Performer."
