Recovery is spiritual and mysterious
Recovery from heartache and heartbreak is spiritual and mysterious, a reinvigoration of radiance. At its very core, our help inspires. The word inspiration comes from the Latin (in spire) for “breathing life into.” When we really help someone, something magical happens that transforms minds and bodies. How that happens, exactly what happens, and how to bring it about is beyond the explanation of current science, though we are learning in small steps.

You and I may be religious. On the other hand, we may be atheists or agnostics. Regardless of our religious beliefs, we can all bow our heads to the mystery of something wonderful that happens, sometimes only for an instant, between two people who share a moment of true caring. Each of us may explain why this happens differently. Some of us may see God working through us to touch another’s soul. Henry Ward Beecher wrote, “Fear is a kind of bell. It is the soul's signal for rallying.”

Others may see the act of helping as magical. Regardless, we all stand together as individuals who go beyond the borders of ourselves to reach out to Friends. These moments have great radiant power.
