A child, for example, may never come home to tell you about a success
at school because she never noticed the achievement. Because
she may believe she is inherently, objectively dumb, how could
it ever be possible for her to succeed? If this is the case,
then success with tasks that require intelligence are never
illuminated by the spotlight. “Stupid” people,
a person might conclude, are not smart enough to succeed.
