Affirmation is not endorsement
Affirmation of the goal does not mean endorsement of the content. Let’s say a child tells me, “When I grow up, I want to be rich!” I think to myself, “Well that’s a pretty shallow goal.” Affirming the heart of the goal (“You want to grow up and accomplish great things and be rewarded for your hard work!”) does not mean endorsing the specific goal of becoming rich (“You want to be rich. That’s great!”).
