Give
children opportunities to practice responsible power
Third, powerful children have experienced opportunities to exercise
their psychological strength. They are encouraged by parents to
try difficult tasks and given loving help at a point if frustration
becomes too difficult to manage. They experience the sacrifice
and devotion of a parent or other significant caregiver. The experience
of power sets one on the path of strength and courage even in the
face of defeat. Once this path is taken, the movement in that direction
tends to reinforce itself, just as the choice of fear and flight
becomes stronger and more dominating each time it is chosen.
