Tool
#11. Physically redirect
Definition:
Physically channel a child's movement away from a potential problem to
a place where he or she can engage in a more acceptable activity. This
spontaneous physical steering is proper only for young children.
Physical redirecting is possible only if space for alternative opportunities
is available. This tool differs from change the activity because
the parent's task is to physically move the child from one space to another
instead of creating a new activity.
Example:
Father
sees his son begin to wander into the kitchen where his big sister's birthday
cake waits for the party to begin. He intercepts his young son at the door
and blocks the entrance. He then physically channels the child's movement
to the living room where he begins to play with stuffed animals. |
