Tool #22. Ask for solutions

Difficulty: Advanced Type: Guidance Ages: 4-18
Definition:
When children are calm enough to think, ask them how they might solve the problem. Have them identify as many solutions as possible. Then ask what they believe is the best solution. Be open to their ideas for solving problems.

Example:
bulletOk, Emily (12 years), you broke the window. What are some of the things you can do now to solve this problem? After some discussion Emily suggests (and her father agrees) to purchase the glass from her small savings and replace the window with her father's help. (restitution)
