Tool #5. Give specific instructions

Difficulty: Advanced Type: Prevention Ages: 2-18
Definition:
When children do not know a rule, tell them what to do. Be clear about your expectations. Caution: overuse of this tool can create insecurity in children and overwhelm them with excessive parental control.

Examples:
bulletDon't touch that knife! Sharp. Stay away! Dangerous!
bulletJamie (4 years), here... share the blocks with your sister.
bulletJason (15 years old and learning to drive), slow down here. You are going too fast when you make a turn.
