For example, the second of the eight steps underlying heroism is Caring. Children are born with an inclination to reach out and seek help from adults. When they are loved and nurtured, they learn the capacity to care about others. Children who are emotionally neglected are at risk of developing a sociopathic personality, a complete focus on self-gratification and an inability to experience compassion and empathy for others. A sociopathic personality would never consider risking his life or making a sacrifice to help another unless the probability of success and the reward is high.
