For example,
the second of the eight steps underlying heroism is Caring. Children
are born with an inclination to reach out and seek help from
adults. When they are loved and nurtured, they learn the capacity
to care about others. Children who are emotionally neglected
are at risk of developing a sociopathic personality, a complete
focus on self-gratification and an inability to experience compassion
and empathy for others. A sociopathic personality would never
consider risking his life or making a sacrifice to help another
unless the probability of success and the reward is high.
