'Music Man,' marching band and more: November brings array of cultural events on campus

It's a November to remember with an abundance of music, drama and art events taking place on the Kansas State University campus.

The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the university's McCain Performance Series; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. Events include:

* The Kansas State University Marching Band, under the direction of Frank Tracz, director of bands and professor of music, and Don Linn, instructor of music, will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Ahearn Field House. A $1 donation will be requested at the door.

* Students of David Pickering, assistant professor of music, will perform an organ concert in All Faiths Chapel at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5.

* "Meet the Art," featuring a discussion of Patrick Duegaw's set pieces, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Beach Museum of Art. Following the discussion, the university's music program and the museum will partner to present a string chamber music recital from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

* The Konza Wind Quintet will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in All Faiths Chapel. Members of the quintet include Karen Large, assistant professor of music, on flute; Nora Lewis, assistant professor of music, on oboe; Todd Kerstetter, professor of music, on clarinet; Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, associate professor of music, on French horn; and Susan Maxwell, instructor of music, on bassoon.

* Tuba and euphonium students of Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in All Faiths Chapel.

* K-State Theatre will present "The Music Man" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8-10, and at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11, all in McCain Auditorium. The musical is a collaborative effort of the university's music, theatre and dance programs. Tickets are available through the McCain Auditorium box office or by calling 785-532-6428.

* Lower-level percussion students under the direction of Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will perform a concert at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The music program's "Sticks and Strings" program will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in All Faiths Chapel. The concert will feature keyboard, percussion and string chamber music.

* The Beach Museum will host Tatsuya Nakatani, an experimental percussionist and sound sculptor, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9. A reception with the artist will follow the performance, and refreshments will be available.

* Double Grammy-winning chamber jazz quartet Turtle Island, along with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton, will visit McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. Tickets to this event cost $12-$55 with applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, by phone at 785-532-6428, or online at www.k-state.edu/mccain.

* Guest pianist Marco Tezza, from Vicenza, Italy, will perform a recital in All Faiths Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. Tezza will perform Debussy's complete piano preludes.

* Upper-division percussion students of Kurt Gartner, professor of music, will perform a concert at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in All Faiths Chapel.

* The university's Brass Ensemble, directed by Andrew Feyes, doctoral student in curriculum and instruction, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in All Faiths Chapel.

* In-A-Chord, the university's a capella vocal ensemble, will give a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at the door, from any In-A-Chord member, or by contacting the group via the In-A-Chord Facebook page, www.facebook.com/KSUInAChord.

* The music program will present a general student recital at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in All Faiths Chapel. The recital will feature students in the wind, brass, keyboard, percussion, string and vocal divisions.

* Los Angeles-based artist Eames Demetrios will discuss his work as a geographer-at-large and describe recording the history of Kcymaerxthaere, a global world of 3D fiction, at a 7 p.m. presentation Thursday, Nov. 15, at the Beach Museum. Refreshments will be provided. A public reception with refreshments will follow at 8 p.m.

* On Saturday, Nov. 17, the Beach Museum will host an evening with Wichita-based artist and K-State alumnus Patrick Duegaw. Duegaw's latest installment of his ongoing work, "Painted Theater Project," is currently on display at the museum. A public opening with refreshments and an informal conversation with the artist will be from 7:30-9 p.m.

* The Collegium Musicum, an early music ensemble, will perform a concert under the direction of Thomas Bell in All Faiths Chapel at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27.

* The Kansas State University Orchestra will perform its last concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in McCain Auditorium. The concert will feature Beethoven's "Triple Concerto" with violinist Kristin Mortenson, instructor of music; cellist David Littrell, distinguished professor of music, and Slawomir Dobrzanski, professor of music. The orchestra will be conducted by Paul Hunt, professor of music. The group also will perform the Ninth Symphony of Shostakovich, which will be conducted by Littrell.

*The university Jazz Bands, under the direction of Wayne Goins, professor of jazz, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.

* The university Jazz Combos, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of jazz, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in Union Station at the Union.

* It's Ladies Night at the Beach Museum from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. Participants will create star-based greeting cards to celebrate the season of light. Dessert also will be offered. Reservations are required. The cost is $10 for the public and $7.50 for Beach Museum members. Call 785-532-7718 to make a reservation or for more information.

* The dance program will present WinterDance in Nichols Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29-Dec. 1, with a 2:30 p.m. matinee also on Dec. 1. Tickets cost $8-$14 and are available through the McCain Auditorium box office at 785-532-6428.

* The saxophone studio of Anna Marie Wytko, assistant professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in All Faiths Chapel. The concert will feature the Golden Apple Saxophone Quartet, Royal Wildcat Saxophone Quartet, and KSU Saxophone Quartet, in addition to solo performances of French, Belgian, American, German and Russian composers.
