Gordon Parks: Self Portrait

KSUnite DEIB Conference Day 1 - November 14, 2022 - Breakout Sessions Period 1 (2:30pm-3:20pm)
Forum Hall

Self Portrait is a character study of photographer and Kansas Native, Gordon Parks based on the museum's exhibit Homeward to the Prairie I Come. Set to live music, the presentation explores five attributes of Parks; Desire, Knowledge, Humility, Perspective, and Integrity. The music is taken from contemporary jazz artist Kamasi Washington's album "Harmony of Difference." To deepen the experience, the audience will participate in an interactive pre-session Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) activity and discuss themes found in Parks' photography.

Museum of Art

Nate McClendon is the Museum Specialist at the Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University. In this capacity he creates programs, events, and activities to enhance and broaden the experience of various exhibits and artworks within the museum. He also works to bring these programs off campus to the greater Manhattan community. This aligns with the museum’s vision of presenting encounters with art as opportunities for exploring human experience.  Examples of these programs are the YouTube video series “Hear What I’m Seeing?” and the musical art exhibit “Gordon Parks: Self Portrait”.

Nate has served 20 years in public education in both Las Vegas, Nevada, and Manhattan, Kansas. Most recently he served as the Director of Orchestras and Jazz Ensemble at Manhattan High School, USD 383. He has collaborated with Jazz at Lincoln Center, National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts, and the Grammy Foundation to promote various student-centered educational experiences and award programs. Additionally, he serves as a consultant and professional speaker in the areas of Social-Emotional Learning, Diversity-Equity-Inclusion and Belonging, Leadership, and grief and bereavement.
