Welcome
The Department of Hospitality Management is proud to be the only program in Kansas that offers both undergraduate and graduate programs in hospitality management and is the only program in Kansas accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA).
Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Hospitality Management is to advance the land-grant mission, hospitality industry, and discipline by preparing undergraduate and graduate students with educational experiences that will positively impact their careers and society; providing theory-based instruction, practical experience and research through student-centered curricula and engagement; and conducting applied, industry-centered research to enhance the well-being of individuals and communities.
Our Roots
Kansas State University's Hospitality Management Department can be traced back to 1952 when K-State President James A. McCain stressed the importance of establishing a restaurant management program at K-State with Dean Margaret Justin. Dean Justin gathered a group of faculty from home economics, business administration, technical journalism, and accounting, along with industry representatives from the local community and state. Together, they developed the first restaurant management program in the state of Kansas. In the 1980's the hotel curriculum was added to the program and in 2013, the curriculum added a focused concentration in meeting, convention, and event management.
Today, the programs are designed to meet the needs of the vibrant hospitality industry. If you are interested in a dynamic career in lodging; food-service; or meeting, convention, and event management you have come to the right place. Teaching, research, study abroad, and leadership opportunities are designed to prepare students for professional careers in our service-oriented, information-based society. Come for a campus visit. Stay for an undergraduate or graduate degree and enhance your marketability and skills.
