K-State team contributes to third edition of 'Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems'

K-State Polytechnic Professors Kurt Barnhart and Eric Shappee, along with their industry colleague Doug Marshall, have edited and authored chapters in the third edition of "Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems." Multiple K-State Polytechnic faculty and staff contributed to this latest edition as did many industry professionals, including several from K-State industry partner General Atomics. The latest book covers sensors, controls, and automation to regulations, safety procedures, and human factors.

This third edition was an extensive revision with added content and one spin-off book yet to be published on the topic of unmanned aircraft system traffic management. K-State's contributions to the publication are as follows:

  • The "System" in UAS
    • Josh Brungardt, professional pilot alumnus, and Kurt Carraway, executive director of the Applied Aviation Research Center and unmanned aircraft systems department head.
  • Safety Assessments
    • Eric Shappee, professor of aviation.
  • Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Communications
    • Saeed M. Khan, professor of unmanned aircraft systems design and integration and electronic and computer engineering technology.
  • Command and Control
    • Nathan Maresch, instructor of unmanned aircraft systems — flight and operations.
  • Cybersecurity Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C- UAS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
    • Randall K. Nichols, professor of practice of unmanned aircraft systems — cybersecurity.
  • The Future of Unmanned Aircraft Systems
    • Tom Haritos, unmanned aircraft systems research program manager, and Kurt Barnhart, professor of aviation.

The book combines understandable technical coverage with up-to-date information on policy and regulation, making it appropriate for aerospace and aviation programs.
