Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Winter weather

Submitted by Savannah Greiner

It is Kansas weather, so even though it's March, don't forget these safety tips to prepare for winter weather:

  • Ensure you have supplies for your home, vehicle and work, including a flashlight, batteries, extra charging options for phones, weather radio, blankets, food, water, etc.
  • Wear layers and proper winter weather gear during wind chill advisories and warnings.
  • Bring your pets inside.
  • Don't run your generator in an enclosed space, and make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working.
  • Try to avoid travel during hazardous weather, but if that's not an option, drive slowly, carefully and plan to have enough supplies in your vehicle.
  • Winter weather can last several days and potentially cut off heat and communication; prepare accordingly.
  • Watch the local weather, news and local emergency alert system as winter storms can last hours or multiple days.
