Student Garden Program 2023 information meeting tonight
The horticulture and natural resources department announces the launch of its Student Garden Program for 2023 and invites students to an information meeting about the program at 6 p.m. today, March 9, in 2414 Throckmorton Hall.
The program will run from April through November 2023 and is limited to currently enrolled K-State students who are willing to commit to the whole season and engage with farm visitors. Attendance at monthly trainings/workshops is required for continued participation in the program.
The program offers two unique tracks, each providing a valuable experience and education in sustainable agriculture practices. The first track, the grower track, is designed for students who want to be a part of the production team for the farm's community-supported agriculture program and for produce sales to K-State dining facilities. On this track, students will grow one or two crops and receive training on, and use of, farm equipment, in addition to marketing and sales training. Participants will share in the revenue from their crops. Students enrolled in the grower track will gain entrepreneurial skills and will also have monthly trainings/workshops and after-hours access to the farm.
The garden track is ideal for students who want to plan, plant and harvest from their own dedicated garden plot. Students in this track will have access to the farm's seed library and irrigation supplies, and they will help install the garden plot. The program also includes training and use of the farm's tools and equipment and monthly trainings/workshops. This track is a great opportunity for students to learn about sustainable gardening practices.
If you are interested, please attend the information meeting tonight, March 9. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the program and ask questions. The meeting is expected to last for an hour, but program coordinators will remain available to answer questions and address concerns as needed.
