APDesign to host Interfaces symposium March 28

The College of Architecture, Planning & Design will host The Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture for the 2023 Interfaces symposium, "Designing Atmospheres: Theory and Science," on March 28 in Regnier Forum, 1118 Regnier Hall on the Kansas State University campus.
Recent advances in the biological sciences are opening new doors to the perception of space and the meaning of architecture and urban design. The question is how this can inform designers of the built world. "Designing Atmospheres: Theory and Science" will present to an audience of architects, students, faculty and scientists a conversation about human perception of design and building, specifically speaking to the significance of affordances, embodied simulation, atmosphere and mood.
The following is the schedule for March 28:
- 8:30 a.m. Elisabetta Canepa, adjunct faculty in the architecture department at K-State, will present "The Elusiveness of Assessing the Atmospheric Essence of Architecture by Body and Emotions."
- 9:30 a.m. Zakaria Djebbara, postdoc at Aalborg University, will give a talk about his new research, "Rhythms in the Brain, Body, and Environment."
- 10:45 a.m. Kory Beighle, assistant professor of architecture at K-State, will present his new research, "A History of Tool-Atmospheres."
- 11:30 a.m. Harry Francis Mallgrave, distinguished professor emeritus from Illinois Institute of Technology, will present the keynote titled "Atmosphere." Mallgrave asks, "How have architects thought about atmosphere in architecture and what it does?"
Moderating the morning's events is Bob Condia, professor of architecture and design partner at Condia+Ornelas Architects.
The symposium is sponsored by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions EU Fellowship — RESONANCE Project and the department of architecture at Kansas State University. The hosts will provide coffee and donuts beginning at 8 a.m. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a break to refresh at 10:30 a.m. Although there is no charge for the event, please RSVP to Brittany Coudriet, project manager, at bcoudriet@k-state.edu by Monday, March 27.
