Activities announced for Indigenous Peoples Day
A special day of activities, breakout sessions and performances is planned for Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, Oct. 9. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
Organized by the K-State Indigenous Faculty and Staff Alliance, the theme for this year's program is "Writing, Singing, and Shaping the Future: Indigenous Film, Art, and Performance." The event is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the K-State Student Union Ballroom.
"We're excited to showcase such an eclectic representation of creative expression from across Indian country and truly appreciate the many sponsors on campus who've come together to support this event just as they have for the past several years," said Alex Red Corn, assistant professor of educational leadership and member of the Osage Nation.
Arigon Starr, award-winning Kickapoo musician, actor and playwright, will speak at 9:30 a.m. Dustin Tahmahkera, Comanche playwright and professor of Native American studies at the University of Oklahoma, will speak at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be catered by Native Chef Jason Champagne.
Performances include a staged reading of Tahmahkera's award-winning comedic play "9-1-1 COMANCHERÍA" at noon, followed by a special exhibition performance by the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation's Little Soldier Dance Troupe at 2:30 p.m.
