Craig M. McGill

Craig M. McGill, assistant professor in the department of special education, counseling and student affairs, is this year's recipient of the College of Education's Michael C. Holen Excellence in Research Award.

McGill teaches graduate courses in academic advising and research methods. Since joining the faculty in 2020, McGill has co-edited two books and authored 25 peer-reviewed articles and 16 book chapters, with many more under review. In 2020, he was honored with the Excellence in Scholarly Inquiry Award from NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising.

"My proudest research accomplishments are those that have been published with students or former students," he said. "I had such amazing mentoring in writing for publication, and if I can mentor future scholars in this way … well, few things bring me more joy."

McGill's primary research revolves around the professionalization of academic advising, with significant contributions to social justice, particularly in advising LGBTQ+ students. Additionally, he publishes on qualitative methodology and how to use qualitative methods.
