Shi to present Distinguished Graduate Faculty Lecture Nov. 30

Submitted by Michael Sellman

Yong-Cheng Shi, professor of grain science and industry, will make a public presentation titled "Modifying starches, flours, and grains for nutritional and functional properties" at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, in the Leadership Studies Building Town Hall, Room 114.

Shi was a recipient of the 2023-2024 Commerce Bank and W.T. Kemper Foundation Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award for his outstanding scholarly achievements and contribution to graduate education at the university.

Shi has been a pioneer in resistant starch development and production, a food ingredient that's resistant to digestion in the human small intestine but fermented in the large intestine, providing health benefits.

His novel research at K-State has led to five patents or pending patents. Thanks to Shi's work, three companies signed an agreement with K-State Innovation Partners and are actively evaluating the patented and patent pending technologies for licensing. Shi has 17 granted U.S. patents and more than 100 publications.

He has been the major advisor or co-advisor to 34 graduate students and has served on the supervisory committee to 12 master's and 15 doctoral graduates in his department, as well as five committees of students in other disciplines.

K-State students, faculty and staff and the public are invited to attend Shi's presentation on Nov 30.
