Short Term Power Outage
In the event of a short term power outage:
- Remain calm.
- Remain where you are and open all available blind/shades/curtains to receive more outside light.
- Plan for such situations having a flash light available in different areas.
- Shut off computers and other electrical devices by turning off power strips. This is to protect against kicking out the circuit breakers, blowing fuses, or damaging equipment when the full surge or current hits as the power comes back on.
- If you are in an unlighted area, go cautiously to an area in the office that has emergency lights or outside light.
- Do not leave the office area without notifying another staff member.
- Lock all public entrances for security. A sign explaining the closure may be posted on entrances if deemed necessary. (Exterior and interior doors are normally not locked unless an extended power outage results in the departure of all employees.)
- If telephones are working, designated office persons should call and report the outage to Facilities Emergencies: Call Minor Repairs (532-6389) “we have a power outage”. Then call Telecommunications (532-7111) to shut off main phone 532-6254, from ringing for incoming calls (it goes to voicemail).
- Wait for further instructions from the campus authorities or office administrator(s).
- When power returns unlock any public entrances, remove signs if necessary, turn on power strips, and designated persons should call telecom to reactivate phones.
- If directed to evacuate go to:
- Office of the Registrar in 118 Anderson Hall – Staff will exit building and meet at the east door of the K-State Student Union. If you are in an elevator, stay calm. Use the intercom and/or emergency button located in the elevator, or your own personal cell phone to alert Security or other persons.

- If phones are out of service use RO emergency calling tree to access cell numbers for communication with staff in different buildings. Designated persons will be the point of contact for receiving calls and disseminating information regarding a power outage. Designated persons will also house and maintain flashlights for their area.
- There is an expectation staff will attempt to continue working as much as possible.
