Here's what's new at CAPS

Submitted by Shawn Funk

Lafene Counseling and Psychological Services, or CAPS, offers many mental health resources for K-State students. CAPS provides consultations, workshops, group and individual therapy. There is no cost for enrolled students to participate in any of these services.

Consultations can be scheduled through the myLAFENE+ patient portal. To improve ease of scheduling for students and to increase accessibility for appointments, portal appointments can now be made 48 hours in advance of appointment time. Students can also walk in for an initial consultation at CAPS between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Students who cannot find an appointment through the portal that works for them are encouraged to call 785-532-6927.

Workshops are offered asynchronously on Canvas this semester and teach skills related to stress management, getting better at relationships, managing difficult thoughts and emotions, mindfulness, and more. Workshops are online and can be completed at the student’s own pace. Students should call CAPS to have a workshop added to their Canvas page.

All groups offered at CAPS this semester meet in person for 1.5 hours each week. Besides Understanding Self and Others, a new group called Moving Naturally Through Challenges is available. It provides practical tools and strategies for managing anxiety, with a focus on engaging in nature-based physical activity for mental health benefits. This group has been developed in partnership with researchers from the K-State kinesiology department.

Also new this semester, CAPS is offering Therapy 101, which provides a supportive space for students to explore and strengthen their mental health journey, whether they are new to therapy or need a refresher.
