Smith's long career at K-State began in 1972 in extension information. In September 1978, she was promoted to the admissions and records office, working as the secretary to the university registrar Don Foster. In March 1982, Smith was again promoted, this time to the vice president for student life office, working for Vice President Chet Peters. After his retirement in 1985, Smith worked for the newly created vice president for institutional advancement office and served as the administrative assistant to Bob Krause.
In 2009, Smith joined the School of Leadership Studies as Mary Tolar’s executive assistant. Her current position is administrative assistant to Steve Dandaneau, the inaugural vice provost for undergraduate studies.
After almost 42 years of service to Kansas State University, Smith has decided to retire and begin a new chapter in her life. She plans on enjoying quality time with family and friends, traveling and catching up on all the projects at home she began but has not had the time or energy to finish.
