Senior percussion student wins concerto competition
Congratulations to Joe Kulick, senior in music education, Oswego Ill., who recently won the Kansas State University Concerto Contest, performing the third movement of Casey Cangelosi's Concerto No. 2 for Marimba. Kulick will perform the work with the K-State Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in McCain Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
On his website, Kulick wrote: "Solo work is by far my favorite literature to play, simply because it is the most intimate experience I can have with music. It allows for me to have unrelenting expression during my performance, and really allows me to open up my true self to the music. Keyboard literature in particular is my most cherished area of percussion, however, I recognize the importance of the other instruments, and certainly make sure I leave room enough to give each area of percussion the time and effort it needs to be proficient."
Kulick is a former member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, and has served as an officer in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the K-State student chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.
